RELEX SMILE – MINIMAL LASER SURGERY ON THE CORNEA

In 2011 Øjenlægernes Center was the first private clinic in Northern Europe to use the proven, pioneering and game-changing ReLEx smile laser technique carried out with the most advanced, stationary laser (Carl Zeiss VisuMax 500 kHz). ReLEx smile (SMall Incision Lenticular Extraction) is state of the art in laser treatment of myopia and astigmatism and has many advantages over older methods as LASIK, FS-LASIK, EpiLASIK and LASEK (PRK and by some named “no cut technique”). Smile is a “flap-free” minimal corneal surgical procedure, optimizing corneal stability after treatment. This is a significant advance over LASIK, where the long “flap-opening” and subsequent reduced corneal stability, have discouraged pilots, military personnel, athletes and others from using the method. The LASIK “flap-opening” is the single most important reason why some professional ophthalmologists are sceptical about refractive laser treatments, and the disadvantage is eliminated with smile.

We have extensive experience in all surgical lens techniques, using only the latest and best techniques. We use minimally invasive lens surgery that requires an incision only a few mm long without stitches. Choice of lens type for the individual patient depends on the correction needed and is determined during our thorough pre-examination, and interview with/examination by the lens surgeon.

Dr Asp holds a permanent position as laser surgeon at the Department of Ophthalmology at Aarhus University Hospital (Northern Europe's leading center in eye laser surgery), and performs more than 30 additional smile treatments every week. Our lens Surgery is headed by Professor Thomas K. Olsen, MD, DMSCi, who has performed more than 12.000 lens operations and is recognised in professional circles as one of Europe’s most competent refractive lens surgeons. For more than twenty years, Professor Olsen has been responsible for the most advanced lens surgery at Aarhus University Hospital.

Laser surgery at The Eye Centre is headed by eye surgeon Sven Asp, MD, DMSci, who for more than 9 years had a permanent position as refractive laser surgeon at the Department of Ophthalmology at Aarhus University Hospital.

EUROPEAN RECORD IN THE SMILEPROCEDURE

Optometrist Lise Løfstrøm is one of the country's leaders in refractive surgery with more than 20 years of experience in the field. She has been employed at The Eye Centre for almost 10 years and is known as a very experienced and competent optometrist who provides optimal and friendly patient management.

EXPERIENCED AND POSITIVE OPTOMETRIST

Optometrist, MSc Optom Annette Surland has worked with refractive eye surgery since 2012. She arrived from a position at the eye department at Aarhus University Hospital. She is known as a well-liked, experienced and competent Optometrist.
Annette performs pre-examinations for laser and lens surgery as well as check-ups mainly in Aarhus.

Annette herself underwent lens surgery with us in 2019 and is today independent of glasses/contact lenses on a daily basis.
