Laser for the Treatment of Nearsightedness and Astigmatism

At Copenhagen Eye Centre (Øjenlægernes Center), we offer all the leading laser surgeries. For the treatment of nearsightedness and astigmatism, we recommend the groundbreaking ReLEx SMILE or SMILE method – a surgery that we were the first private eye laser center in Northern Europe to offer. Our leading surgeon is still the one who has performed the most SMILE surgeries in Northern Europe (over 12,000 treatments), and in the following article, we take a closer look at the SMILE method.

Recommend the SMILE treatment

“The SMILE treatment was largely without discomfort and already after two days I slowly resumed training. The process at the Ophthalmology Center was really professional and can only be recommended”

SMILE Laser Treatment

SMILE stands for Small Incision Lenticular Extraction and is both a gentle and effective eye laser treatment. During the treatment, the unique and advanced Zeiss VisuMax laser cuts three-dimensionally in the middle of the cornea, making a small and precise 2 mm incision at the top of the cornea. Subsequently, we use special micro instruments to remove the cut tissue lens (which is as thin as 40 micrometers) from the center of the cornea, altering the curvature of the cornea and resulting in improved vision. The quick recovery time and the fact that no flap is created in the eye as with older techniques are among the reasons why SMILE is so groundbreaking. However, it is still only offered by selected eye clinics, simply because the treatment must be performed by experienced and specialized eye surgeons, and the quality laser is extremely costly. We are the only private providers offering the procedure east of the Great Belt (Charlottenlund).

Treatment of Astigmatism with Eye Laser

Astigmatism is an irregularity in the cornea that makes it difficult to focus on the surroundings. People with astigmatism often have blurry vision, which can interfere with daily activities. Some also experience headaches or dizziness because they have to concentrate hard to see their surroundings, thus overloading their eyes. This can have serious long-term consequences, so it is important to seek help if you experience symptoms of astigmatism. When one of the senses is impaired, it affects other elements in the body and significantly impacts one’s psyche. Fortunately, there are many ways to correct astigmatism and regain quality of life. Many people use glasses or contact lenses to correct their vision. However, these aids can sometimes be more bothersome than helpful. Glasses often fog up or get wet depending on the weather, and contact lenses tend to dry out. At Copenhagen Eye Centre (Øjenlægernes Center), we offer eye laser surgery to treat astigmatism. With eye laser surgery, we can change and correct the structure of the cornea, so you can see clearly again. You can read much more about laser treatment on this site. You are also welcome to contact us with any additional questions.

Before the operation

Before the SMILE treatment, we thoroughly examine the patient to assess if the eyes are suitable. Vision must have been stable for the last 1-2 years before the treatment, and there should not be significant issues with dry eyes. During the pre-examination, we will explain the operation, recovery process, and any potential side effects in detail. SMILE is a well-tested method with a high success rate, and the risk of complications is minimal when performed by an experienced laser surgeon.

Treatment and Aftercare

The laser treatment itself takes only about 30 seconds per eye, and since the eyes are numbed with eye drops, discomfort is minimal. After the treatment, you can leave the clinic, and the next day we will check your eyes. Follow-up checks are repeated about three weeks and about six months after the operation.
