Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
Are there any risks associated with eye surgery?
There are risks associated with all eye treatments. Fortunately, complications are extremely rare in connection with modern eye treatments when they are performed by experienced and competent surgeons. You will be thoroughly informed about the course of the treatment and its risks during the preliminary examination.
How long does the treatment take?
The laser treatment itself takes approximately 30 seconds and is painless. The experienced laser eye surgeon will give you precise instructions on what to do during the treatment. The most important thing is to lie still, remember to breathe, and keep your eye steady, which is made easier by the anesthetic eye drops. On the day of the treatment, you should expect your visit to The Eye Doctors’ Center to take just under one hour in total. Lens surgery typically takes less than 15 minutes per eye, and you should expect the entire procedure to take a little over one hour.
Do I need glasses after the treatment?
Normally, patients will be able to manage without glasses or contact lenses after the treatment; however, this depends on age and the type of vision error being treated. You will receive personalized information during the preliminary examination and/or in consultation with the surgeon.
What is the healing time?
Because the procedure on the cornea is minimal with the SMILE treatment and is largely performed beneath the upper eyelid, healing is faster with this technique compared to older alternatives. After just a few days, the cornea is very stable (see Patient Stories) – however, we recommend avoiding significant physical activity during the first week. After two weeks, you can participate in most forms of physical activity. Following our lens surgery, you should likewise take it easy during the first couple of weeks after the treatment.
When can I see clearly?
Immediately after the treatment, vision will be blurry or hazy. The “haze” will gradually clear over the following days, and vision will become increasingly stable over the following weeks and months. Patience is important after the treatment, as it takes some time for the eye to fully adjust to the new conditions.
Do you also offer lens replacements?
We also offer advanced lens surgery at the highest level. We collaborate with some of Denmark’s leading ophthalmologists and optometrists in laser treatment and lens surgery.
If you are considering vision-correcting treatment and are in your mid-40s to early-50s, we generally recommend lens surgery rather than laser treatment.
